The Ipswich Society’s Annual Award night took a slightly different form this year. An approach was conceived involving a careful examination of the awards given during this, the first quarter of the 21st century.

We examined those 16 projects which had been given the Award of Distinction during the last 25 years. Our purpose was to judge, the “best of the best’ to be given the new ‘John Norman Award of Distinction’.

From a final judged shortlist of five of the previous winners over the years:

2003 & 2009 Isaacs Saleroom and Crossway Refurbishment at Isaac Lord’s, transformations that have collectively provided an initiative to create the Waterfront space we enjoyed today.

2004 Endeavour House – modern ground-breaking building now SCC HQ,

2015 Holywells Park -transformational refurbishment and improvement.

2018 St. Augustine Church The Lantern Room, transformed the existing building.

2019 The Maltings Refurbishment, transformative, a statement building at a portal to the town.

The judges determined a worthy winner in the first quarter of the 21st century for the retrospective ‘John Norman Award of Distinction’ be presented to the 2015 Holywell’s Park project:

Judges felt this was a transformational, large project, it was public-spirited in its intention, had had a significant and lasting impact on the Community, and it has ensured the preservation of important historic sites for the town.

One major criterion was that the space is for all, that it appeals to all age groups, the buildings, the ambience, the range of components welcomes you in draws you in entices you, fun in the areas and joy in the space. The project has raised the profile of the entire park with the restoration of the wildlife ponds, creation of wild gardens, as well as the restored stables, conservatory, raised spaces and maze.

Pictures feature The John Norman Award of Distinction being presented to Holywell’s Park Manager, Nick Wilcox, Friends of Holywell’s Park, Robin Gape and Councillor Lucy Trenchard by Mayor Elango Elavalakan and Graham Lambert, Ipswich Society Chairman, as well as Views of the Park, Café and Orangery
